Your syllabus says Homework 20%, Quizzes 15%, Midterm 25%, Final 40%. The calculator above turns that table into a number. Enter each category’s weight and the score you’re carrying in it, and it returns your weighted course grade as a percentage plus the matching letter grade on the standard scale. It does two things most gradebooks don’t do clearly. First, it warns you when your weights don’t total 100% — a table that adds to 95% or 105% quietly distorts every result. Second, it shows two grades: your grade across the whole course, and your grade on completed work only. With the example above, a final worth 40% that hasn’t happened yet drags the overall number to 50.7%, an F, while your work so far is actually running 84.4%, a B. Both numbers are real; they answer different questions. The sections below explain which one to trust and when.
How do I calculate my weighted grade?
Multiply each category’s score by its weight, add the products, then divide by the total weight. With Homework 20% at 92, Quizzes 15% at 85 and Midterm 25% at 78, that’s 18.4 + 12.75 + 19.5 = 50.65, divided by the 0.60 of weight assigned so far, which gives 84.4%. Why is my grade so low if I haven’t taken the final yet?
Usually one of two things. Either your instructor has entered a real zero for the ungraded final, or you are looking at the total grade instead of the current grade. In Canvas the checkbox labelled Calculate based only on graded assignments is ticked by default, so the number you normally see already excludes the ungraded final; unticking it switches to the total grade, which counts it as a zero. A student at 92 homework, 85 quizzes and 78 midterm with a 40% final outstanding shows 50.7% one way and 84.4% the other — 33.8 points apart. The completed-work number is your real standing today.
Does 89.5% round up to an A?
Only if your instructor’s policy says so — there is no universal rule. Some syllabi state that final averages round to the nearest whole number, which makes 89.5 a 90; others truncate, leaving it an 89; many say nothing and leave it to the instructor’s discretion. Check the exact wording in your syllabus before counting on it, and remember the registrar records whatever letter your instructor submits.
