Frequently Asked Questions

When are rent receipts required for HRA?

Rent receipts are mandatory when your annual rent paid exceeds Rs 1 lakh (approximately Rs 8333 per month). Below this threshold a self-declaration may suffice depending on your employer policy. However it is good practice to maintain rent receipts for all amounts as the income tax department may request them during assessment or scrutiny.

Do I need landlord PAN for rent receipt?

Yes if your annual rent exceeds Rs 1 lakh you must provide your landlord PAN number to your employer. If the landlord does not have a PAN they must provide a signed declaration stating they do not have PAN along with their name and address. Without landlord PAN or declaration your employer may not allow the HRA exemption.

What should a valid rent receipt contain?

A valid rent receipt must include: tenant name and address landlord name and address rent amount (in words and figures) period of occupancy (month and year) payment mode (cash cheque or bank transfer) landlord signature and revenue stamp for amounts above Rs 5000. For bank transfers the receipt should mention the transaction reference number.
