Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good GPA for college admissions?
For top-50 US universities aim for 3.7+ unweighted and 4.0+ weighted. Ivy League admits average 3.9+ unweighted. State universities typically accept 3.0+ GPA. Community colleges generally have open enrollment. Remember GPA is just one factor along with test scores extracurriculars and essays. A strong upward trend (improving grades each year) can compensate for a lower cumulative GPA.
How to calculate weighted GPA?
Weighted GPA adds 0.5 points for Honors courses and 1.0 point for AP/IB courses. An A in a regular class = 4.0 but an A in AP class = 5.0 and an A in Honors = 4.5. Calculate: (sum of weighted grade points) / (number of courses). Taking challenging courses and earning Bs can result in a higher weighted GPA than easy courses with all As.
Can I raise my GPA significantly in one semester?
It depends on how many credits you have completed. With 60 credits at 3.0 GPA earning all As in a 15-credit semester raises your GPA to approximately 3.2. The more credits completed the harder it is to move your GPA. Focus on earning the highest grades in courses with the most credit hours. Retaking failed courses (if allowed) and replacing the F with an A has the biggest single impact.
