Frequently Asked Questions
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared: BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)². For example if you weigh 70 kg and are 1.75 m tall your BMI = 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 70 / 3.0625 = 22.86 which falls in the normal weight category.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat so muscular athletes may show as overweight. It also does not account for age gender bone density or fat distribution. For Asian populations health risks may begin at a lower BMI. The WHO recommends lower BMI cutoffs for Asians: overweight at 23+ and obese at 25+ compared to 25 and 30 for Western populations.
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
For Indians and other Asian populations the healthy BMI range is considered 18.5-22.9. Overweight starts at 23 (not 25 as in Western standards) and obese at 25. This is because South Asians tend to have more visceral fat and higher diabetes risk at lower BMI levels compared to Caucasian populations.
